Water in Diesel Fuel: Why It Happens and How to Drain It
Water is one of the most destructive things that can get into a diesel fuel system, and in a humid coastal climate like the Lowcountry it shows up more than most people realize. The good news: managing it is simple and cheap.
Where the water comes from
- Condensation. Air in a fuel tank carries moisture; as temperatures swing, that moisture condenses on tank walls and drips into the fuel. A half-empty tank overnight in humid air is a water factory.
- Contaminated fuel. Water can ride in from a station’s storage tank, especially low-volume pumps.
- Bad caps or seals letting rain or wash water in.
Why water is so damaging
Diesel fuel lubricates the injection system. Water doesn’t lubricate — so where it displaces fuel, it causes metal-to-metal wear in the high-pressure pump and injectors. It also flash-boils at injector tips (steam pitting), causes corrosion and rust through the system, and feeds microbial growth (“diesel bug”) that clogs filters with slime. On CP4-pump engines, water is one more thing that can help destroy the pump.
Drain the separator regularly
Most diesels have a water separator on the primary fuel filter with a drain valve at the bottom. Draining it is a two-minute job: put a container under the drain, open the valve until clean fuel runs (you’ll see water and any gunk come out first), then close it. Do this regularly — and immediately if a “water in fuel” light comes on. Don’t ignore that light; it’s protecting thousands of dollars in parts.
Keep tanks dry
- Keep the tank full, especially overnight and in storage — less air space means less condensation.
- Use a quality fuel source and avoid the bottom of low-volume station tanks.
- Add a water-absorbing/biocide treatment when needed, particularly for equipment and standby tanks that sit.
- Check caps and seals.
When water has already done damage
If you’ve had a big slug of water — hard starting, rough running, a filter full of slime — draining isn’t always enough. The filters may need changing, the system may need purging, and severe cases can mean injector or pump damage. Catching it at the separator is far cheaper than catching it at the injectors.
