Duramax L5P and LML Common Problems
GM’s 6.6L Duramax V8 (in Chevy and GMC HD trucks) is a strong, smooth diesel with a good reputation. The recent LML (2011-2016) and L5P (2017-present) generations are reliable, but each has known items worth knowing.
LML (2011-2016): the CP4 pump
The LML’s best-known concern is the Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure fuel pump. As on other CP4 applications, a failure can send metal through the entire fuel system — an expensive, system-wide repair. Protect it the same way: use quality fuel, never run the tank low or out, and many owners fit a disaster-prevention/bypass kit. The LML also has the usual emissions upkeep — DPF, DEF system, EGR, and NOx sensors.
L5P (2017-present): strong, emissions-sensitive
The L5P moved to a different (Denso) high-pressure pump and is regarded as very robust. Its considerations are mostly the modern-emissions kind: DPF regeneration and cleaning, DEF/SCR system upkeep, NOx sensors, and keeping the aftertreatment happy — particularly on trucks that idle or do short trips. The L5P is a stout engine when maintained.
Across Duramax generations, watch for
- Emissions/aftertreatment maintenance and faults — the most common service items.
- Water pump wear as the truck ages.
- Glow plug issues on higher-mileage trucks (hard cold starts).
- Fuel filter discipline — critical to protect injectors and the pump.
- Allison transmission service — the Allison is excellent, but it earns its reputation by getting its fluid and filter changed on schedule, especially if you tow.
The maintenance that matters
- Oil changes with correct low-ash CK-4 oil at the right interval.
- Fuel filter changes on time and water drained — your pump and injector insurance.
- Allison transmission service per the towing/severe schedule if you pull trailers.
- Highway runs to keep the DPF clean; don’t ignore emissions warnings.
Buying used?
Get service records, scan for codes, check for emissions deletes (a liability and a neglect flag), and confirm the Allison has been serviced. A cared-for Duramax — especially an L5P — is a long-haul keeper.
