Port Drayage Duty Cycle: Maintenance for Charleston Fleets
Port drayage is one of the hardest duty cycles in trucking, and trucks running containers in and out of the Port of Charleston wear in ways that mileage-based maintenance completely misses. If you schedule a drayage truck like a long-haul truck, you’ll under-service it and pay for it.
Why drayage is different
A long-haul truck puts on big miles at steady highway speed — the easy life for an engine. A drayage truck does the opposite: low miles, high hours, endless stop-and-go, heavy loads off the line, and long stretches of idling in terminal queues. The odometer says “barely driven” while the engine has worked a full hard day. That mismatch is the trap.
Service by hours and idle time, not just miles
Because drayage trucks accumulate engine hours and idle time far out of proportion to miles, schedule PM by engine hours (or fuel burned) where your engine maker allows it. A truck that turns 30,000 miles a year may have run the engine-hour equivalent of double that.
The items stop-and-go punishes
- Brakes. Constant stop-and-go and heavy launches eat linings and heat drums far faster than highway driving. Inspect more often.
- DPF and aftertreatment. Low speeds and heavy idling mean the truck rarely gets hot enough for passive regen, so the DPF loads up and forces frequent active regens. Expect more frequent DPF cleaning and watch for derate-causing soot loading.
- Transmission and clutch. Repeated launches under load wear driveline components quickly.
- Cooling system. Idling in summer heat with little airflow stresses the cooling system — keep it clean and tested.
- Tires. Scrubbing in tight terminal turns and curb contact wear tires unevenly; rotate and inspect.
Idle is the hidden cost
Excessive idling loads the DPF, wet-stacks the engine, dilutes oil, and racks up wear with zero miles to show for it. Where possible, reduce idle time and account for it in service intervals. An idle-heavy truck needs oil and DPF attention sooner than the mileage suggests.
Build the schedule around how the truck actually works
The fix is simple in principle: track engine hours and idle, service brakes and aftertreatment on the accelerated schedule the duty cycle demands, and stop trusting the odometer. A drayage truck on a proper hour-based PM program stays out of the derate-and-tow cycle that kills uptime.
