DPF Cleaning Intervals for Class 8 Trucks
A diesel particulate filter cleans soot by burning it off during regen — but burning soot leaves ash, and ash doesn’t burn away. It accumulates permanently until the filter is physically cleaned off the truck. Skip that and you get high backpressure, constant regens, power loss, and eventually a derate.
Soot vs. ash — the key distinction
- Soot is carbon; regen burns it off continuously. The truck manages this itself.
- Ash is the non-combustible residue left behind — mostly from engine oil additives and a little from fuel and wear metals. Regen can’t remove it. It slowly fills the filter’s channels over tens of thousands of miles.
When ash fills enough of the filter, there’s no room left for soot, so the truck regens more and more often, loses power, and finally needs service.
Typical cleaning interval
Most fleets clean the DPF somewhere in the 200,000–400,000 mile range, but it varies a lot with engine, duty cycle, and oil consumption — always follow your engine maker’s recommendation. Severe-duty and idle-heavy trucks (drayage, vocational) hit the interval sooner because they load the filter faster and regen less efficiently.
What drives ash buildup faster
- Oil consumption. An engine burning oil (worn rings, turbo seals) dumps ash into the DPF quickly. Watch oil usage.
- Wrong oil. High-ash oil loads the filter faster. Use the correct low-SAPS CK-4 oil.
- Idle and short cycles. Less efficient regens and more soot mean more frequent attention.
Cleaning options
Off-truck DPF cleaning is done by thermal/pneumatic processes (bake and blow out) or aqueous (wash) methods that remove the ash and restore flow. A good cleaning includes a flow check before and after to confirm it’s actually clean — and inspection for cracks or melted substrate (a sign of a past uncontrolled regen). Filters that are cracked or face-plugged from abuse may need replacement instead.
Don’t run it to failure
A DPF run far past its cleaning point doesn’t just cost a cleaning — extreme backpressure and uncontrolled regens can crack or melt the substrate, turning a routine service into a new filter. Track filter performance (backpressure, regen frequency) and clean on schedule.
