Hydraulic Oil Types and Change Intervals
Hydraulic oil isn’t just “oil” — it’s the working fluid that transmits power, lubricates pumps and valves, carries away heat, and protects against rust. Using the wrong type or stretching the interval is a direct path to expensive pump and valve failures.
Match the manufacturer’s spec first
Always start with what the machine maker specifies. Equipment hydraulic systems are designed around a fluid’s viscosity and additive package. The common families:
- Anti-wear (AW) hydraulic oil — the standard for most equipment (AW32, AW46, AW68). The number is the viscosity grade.
- Multi-grade / all-season hydraulic oil — wider temperature range, better for machines that work in both cold mornings and hot afternoons.
- Biodegradable hydraulic fluid — required on environmentally sensitive job sites.
- OEM-specific fluids — some manufacturers require their own blend; substituting can void warranty or cause issues.
Viscosity matters more than you think
Too thick when cold and the pump cavitates and struggles on startup; too thin when hot and you lose the protective film, accelerating wear. In the Lowcountry, summer heat pushes toward the thicker/multi-grade end so the oil keeps its film at temperature, but you still want it to flow on a cool morning. Match the grade to your climate and duty within the maker’s allowed range.
Change intervals
Typical hydraulic oil changes fall around 1,000–2,000 hours, with filters more often (500–1,000 hours), but confirm against your manual. Machines in heavy dust, high heat, or continuous duty need it sooner. Always change filters when you change the oil and any time you open the system.
Let an oil analysis set the real interval
Rather than guessing, pull a fluid sample and have it analyzed. It reports viscosity, water, particle count, and wear metals — telling you whether the oil is still good (safely extend the interval) or whether a pump is starting to come apart (act now). For expensive machines, analysis pays for itself.
Don’t mix types
Mixing incompatible hydraulic fluids can cause additives to drop out, foaming, or sludge. If you switch types, flush properly. Keep clean, labeled containers and dedicated funnels — introducing dirt during a fluid change is one of the most common ways systems get contaminated.
